Sewer backup: first steps and when it points to a broken line
A clog and a break can look the same at first. Both fill the lowest drain with wastewater. The difference shows after the line is cleared. If the backup returns in days or weeks, or a cable keeps catching at one distance, the pipe itself is suspect.
- Backups that keep coming back after cleaning
- A wet, sunken or unusually green patch of yard over the line's path
- Sewer odor outside near the foundation
- Gurgling fixtures and slow drains throughout the house
- A cable that stops at the same point each time
Stop all water use and call. A same-day appointment, when available, is the safest route, because wastewater in a finished basement spreads damage fast. We do not diagnose from the phone alone, so expect a camera look to come first.
Where we start: find the failure before choosing the fix
Repair depends on a camera inspection. We run the camera, mark the distance to each problem and, if needed, trace the line from the surface. That tells us whether we are fixing one section or the whole run, and it shapes your options. For a closer look at that step, see our sewer camera inspection page.
Spot repair, lining or replacement, side by side
| Approach | What it involves | Fits when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | Dig to one damaged section and replace or sleeve it | One crack, offset joint or root entry with sound pipe on both sides | More cracks elsewhere that the camera should have shown |
| Trenchless pipe lining | A resin-saturated liner is pulled in and cured to form a new pipe inside the old one | Cracks and root entry along a pipe that is still round and in line | A collapsed or badly offset pipe can stop a liner from working |
| Pipe bursting | A new pipe is pulled through as the old one is broken apart | A pipe too damaged for lining and access at both ends | Needs entry pits and can disturb nearby utilities |
| Open trench replacement | Dig out and replace the whole run | Collapsed, sagging or badly broken lines | Landscaping, driveways and walks in the way |
No approach is always best. A spot repair on one cracked joint can be quicker and less costly than lining a whole run. A liner can spare a driveway or mature tree. We lay out the options with what the camera showed, and you choose.
How a repair job runs
Camera and locate
We find the problem and mark it, so the work happens in the right place.
Confirm the plan
You hear the options and the clear price before work starts.
Check the permit question
Permit rules vary. The Township Construction Office decides what needs one, and we tell you when to ask.
Repair and retest
We fix the pipe, run water, and camera the line again to confirm the repair holds.
Restore the site
Open trench sections are backfilled. Landscape restoration is discussed up front.
Backup in the house right now?
Stop the water and call. Dispatch is open 24/7, and same-day appointments are booked when available. Tell us what is affected and we send the right equipment.
Cast iron, clay and plastic pipe: what it means for you
Older sewer and drain lines can be cast iron, clay or plastic, and each fails in its own way. Cast iron tends to corrode from the inside and flake, clay joints can let roots in, and plastic can crack or sag if bedding settles. The camera tells us what we are dealing with.
We do not assume a material from the age of a house. Levitt and Sons built thousands of homes in Sicklerville in the 1970s, including the Winslow Crossing streets of Primrose Gate and Arbor Meadows, and an owner in 08081 should expect the line to be roughly fifty years old. Ask for footage before agreeing to a full replacement.
Winslow sewer service: what the Township and CCMUA control
In the Township, a sewer connection starts with an application to the Department of Municipal Utilities.
The Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority approves a separate application, the Construction Department issues the permit, a registered plumber makes the connection, and the plumbing inspector must approve it before sewer billing starts. The Township's published connection fee is $3,998 plus a $5 application fee.
That matters for repairs because the section on your property is yours to fix, but the connection and the system beyond are the utility's. Call the DMU at 609-567-0700 to ask where your responsibility ends.
The Construction Office, at option 5 on the same number, says whether your repair needs a permit. Plumbing inspections are held Tuesday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
New Jersey's plumbing subcode is the 2021 edition of the National Standard Plumbing Code Illustrated, and plumbing work must be done by a licensed master plumber or an authorized contractor.
Ask any plumber for a license number and verify it with the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers. The Pinelands setting of about 80 percent of Winslow also means roots are common, which is why we look for them in yard lines in 08095, 08018 and 08004.
Septic: where our work stops
Some Winslow streets are not on public sewer. If your house uses septic, the repair we do is on the house plumbing side, including the line from the house to the tank. A septic contractor handles the tank, the distribution box and the drain field.
We will not guess whether a backup is the tank or the pipe. If the camera shows a clear house line, the next call should go to a septic service. Ask the DMU if you are unsure whether your street is on sewer or septic.
What shapes the price of a repair
Sewer line repair pricing, explained
We give a clear price before work starts. These factors decide how big the job is.
Homeowners insurance typically responds to sudden damage and not to wear or neglect. A root-damaged or aged pipe is usually treated as wear, while sudden water damage inside the house may be handled differently. Ask your carrier before work starts.
Before we arrive
Stop using water
Every flush or shower pushes more into the line.
Move valuables
Lift items off wet floors and keep electronics clear of the backup.
Show us the cleanout
Clear a path to the capped access pipe.
Take photos
Wet spots and water lines help with an insurance conversation later.

A clog clears and stays clear. A broken line keeps backing up, often at the same point. A camera inspection is the quickest way to tell.
Not always. It spares the yard when the pipe is still round and aligned. A collapsed or badly offset pipe often needs digging. We explain which applies after the camera look.
A liner seals the openings roots use. Roots in the pipe are cleared first. A liner does not help a pipe that has already collapsed.
No. We handle the house plumbing and the line to the tank. A septic contractor handles the tank and field.
