Burst pipe: what to do first
Shut off the main
Find the house valve, often near the water heater, the meter or where the line enters the house. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Cut power if water is near electric
Flip breakers for wet rooms only if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely. If not, stay out and call.
Drain the lines
Open the lowest faucet and a high one to release pressure. Flush a toilet once.
Turn the water heater off
Gas to pilot or electric breaker off, so the tank does not heat with no water coming in.
Photograph the damage
Take pictures before you mop. They help with an insurance claim.
If you cannot find the main, or the valve will not turn, do not force it with a wrench. Tell us on the call. If water is coming through a ceiling light fixture, leave the room and use the breaker only if you can do it without stepping into water.
Cracked and broken pipe: why pipes fail
Pipes break from freezing, age, a bad joint, shifting ground, high pressure or damage from a nail or digging. A hairline crack may weep for weeks before it gives way. A burst is usually a failure that has been building.
Sicklerville's 1970s Levitt-built homes, such as those in Primrose Gate and Manor Hall, are now well past fifty years old. We do not know which pipe was used in any given house from the year alone, so we check on site.
If one failure appears in an older home, we look at nearby pipe for similar wear before we call it fixed.
| Pipe problem | Typical sign | Repair approach |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen then split supply pipe | Water appears when the thaw starts | Cut out the split section and replace it, then check adjacent runs |
| Pinhole in copper | Green stain, wet drywall, tiny spray | Section replacement or a fitting, depending on pipe condition |
| Cracked drain pipe | Damp floor or ceiling under a bath, slow drains | Replace the damaged piece and test the line with water |
| Failed joint or fitting | Drip at a connection | Remake or replace the joint |
| Underground supply break | Wet yard, low pressure | Locate, then spot dig or replace the run |
Pipe leak repair when it is not yet a burst
A slow leak is a warning. A wet cabinet floor, a drip under a vanity or a stain that returns after you dry it means the pipe or joint is failing. Fixing it on a calm afternoon costs less and does less damage than waiting for the flood.
When the slow leak is hidden, our leak detection service pinpoints it first. We will not open walls on a hunch.
Copper pipe repair
Copper breaks differently than plastic. It can split along the seam when frozen, develop pinholes from the inside and weaken at soldered joints. We cut out the bad section and replace it with new pipe and fittings that suit your system, rather than wrapping a patch around old metal.
If copper pinholes appear in more than one place, the pipe has a system-wide problem. That is the point to discuss a repipe instead of repeated spot repairs.
Drain pipe repair
Drain breaks are quieter than supply breaks. They show as a damp ceiling below a bathroom, a gurgling sound or a smell of sewer gas, and they leak only when something is running. We test by running water through the fixtures, then replace the cracked section and retest.
A crack in the main sewer line outside the house is a different job. See our sewer line repair page for that.
Water on the floor right now?
Call (609) 547-1417. Dispatch is 24/7 and we take same-day appointments when available. Close the main while you dial.
Frozen pipes: the aftermath section
A pipe that froze may have split without leaking until it thawed. After a hard freeze, check exposed lines in garages, crawlspaces, outside walls and under sinks on exterior walls. Water spots, a hiss or low pressure after the thaw all point to a split.
If a pipe is frozen but not yet broken, open the faucet slightly and warm the area gently with a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If you cannot reach the frozen section, leave it to a plumber.
Burst pipes and water in the house, then what
Water that stays on drywall and insulation grows mold, so drying matters as much as the pipe fix. We stop the leak and repair the plumbing. Drying equipment, drywall and flooring repair are done by restoration contractors, and your insurer may direct that.
Residents of Sicklerville 08081, Winslow 08095, Cedar Brook 08018 and West Atco 08004 reach the same dispatch line, as do eastern Winslow addresses under 08037. Neighboring Waterford Township is also in our service area.
Permits and who decides
Plumbing work in New Jersey must be done by a master plumber, an authorized plumbing contractor or their W-2 employees. The state plumbing subcode is the 2021 National Standard Plumbing Code Illustrated. Whether a given repair needs a permit is a decision for the Construction Office, at 609-567-0700 option 5, and we do not guess.
You can ask any plumber for their license number and check it with the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers at njconsumeraffairs.gov/plu.
What affects the cost of burst pipe repair
You get a clear price before work starts. These factors change it.
Homeowners insurance typically responds to sudden damage such as a burst pipe, and not to wear or neglect. Ask your carrier early, and keep your photos.

It may have split without leaking yet. Watch for drips and pressure loss after the thaw, and call if you see either.
Often a section repair works. If pinholes appear in several places, we discuss replacement of a longer run.
Permit rules vary, so ask the Construction Office. They decide, and plumbing inspections run Tuesday to Thursday mornings.
